Pathways for Instructionally Embedded Assessment (PIE)
PIE is a research and development project aimed at providing a universally designed, innovative assessment model that allows students to demonstrate competencies as they learn while also producing results that may be used for statewide summative assessment purposes.
The PIE project team will design, develop, and evaluate a prototype integrated assessment model that provides multiple measures of student progress and achievement using instructionally embedded and end-of-year assessments that are aligned to research-based cognitive models of learning.
PIE is a four-year grant-funded project led by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in partnership with ATLAS.
The project has four goals:
- Broadly disseminate project materials and findings to a variety of audiences, including the proof of concept for potential use as a statewide assessment system.
- Design an approach to evaluating technical adequacy, including scoring model, theory of action, and validation planning for potential use as a statewide assessment.
- Evaluate the usability of the PIE assessment system under natural conditions.
- Design, develop, administer, and evaluate the PIE assessment system based on learning pathways aligned to fifth-grade mathematics content standards.
